The Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, “The best dīnār (1) is a dīnār a man spends on his dependents; and a dīnār a man spends on his pack animal for God's sake; and a dīnār a man spends on his companions for God's sake.” Abū Qilābah (one of the narrators of the ḥadīth) mentioned that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, began with the dependents. He then said, “Who else could earn a greater reward than a man spending on his minor dependents? For through his spending, God restrains them (from the unlawful) and suffices them.” Footnote: (1) A dīnār is a gold coin which was used as currency in the time of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him.
